My name is Belinda Dokter. I was born in the Netherlands and live since 2008 in Alstätte (Germany) in the neighberhood of Enschede (Nethetlands)
At the age of 29, I found my true love: sculpting.
It was love at first touch with the materials I had been searching for so long, materials I was eager to work with. This special and delightful encounter moved me deeply,I had finally found what I was looking for. That’s how I describe this powerful revelation.
Finding my own artistic style took time, as did attending various courses on glazing and glazing techniques, both in the Netherlands and abroad. I also took part in a Masterclass in Monumental Ceramics. That investment is now paying off, as my work gains increasing recognition both nationally and internationally.
My sculptures are unmistakable.
They are characterized by exaggerated feminine curves: overly large bottoms, always too small feet, oversized lips, chubby cheeks, and wild, flowing hair that seems to have a life of its own. My figures often bring a smile to the faces of those who see them. Boldly coloured and always sculpted with bizarre proportions, my ‘Dikke Dames’ (Chubby Ladies) are instantly recognizable.
I always create my ‘Dikke Dames’ as part of a series and based on a specific theme. Thanks to my vivid imagination and a touch of self mockery, coming up with new themes usually happens quite naturally.
